It is in many ways the birthplace of Classical Greece, and therefore of Western civilization. The design of the city is marked by Ottoman, Byzantine and Roman civilizations. The Acropolis, a Unesco World Heritage Site, was the ancient fortified town of Athens, dating back to the Late Bronze Age, and the site of the best buildings of the Greek Classical age: the Parthenon, the Erectheion, the Temple of Athena Nike. Acropolis dominates the Athenian sky and symbolizes the foundation of modern culture and civilization. To make matters worse Greeks were expected to contribute more since taxes and the overall cost of living went up. Homelessness and suicide rates skyrocketed as people couldn’t cope with their new reality. Greeks felt betrayed by their government for allowing the situation to get to breaking point. It’s now 2016 and Greece has a new challenge – the refugee crisis. The country has shown great humanity to those who have lost everything despite the fact that Greeks are still suffering themselves. The Greek crisis doesn’t make international headlines the way it used to. Is it because the situation is improving or because people have lost hope that anything will change? After all, it was only a year ago when 61 percent of the population voted against the new bailout conditions proposed by the troika of lenders. How do those people who voted ‘No’ feel considering the prime minister ignored the majority and implemented even more austerity measures? Our correspondent, who travelled to Athens in 2014 to cover the daily protests on Parliament Square, decided to visit some of the people she met two years ago and find out what they have to say about their country now and whether their lives are improving. After years of austerity and more to come, how are they coping? And if not, why are they not on the streets like before? http://www.euronews.com/ Every year, thousands of asylum seekers arrive in Greece in a bid to build new lives but the reality that greets them is often as stark as the one they have fled from in the first place - the potential of unemployment, destitution, the ever-present threat of deportation, and more recently, the likelihood of racially motivated violence. There are, however, many Greeks determined to change things. Amongst them, many youth activists are looking to the plight of those migrants, refugees and asylum seekers living in the country. Whilst appreciative of the difficulties of changing the current status quo, for now, they have one, concrete goal: to better understand society's attitude towards asylum seekers. In the shadow of Greece's economic collapse, that attitude is one heavily influenced by Golden Dawn - the extreme-right party, which won 18 parliamentary seats last year on a violently anti-immigrant platform. Asylum may be a Greek word, but so too is xenophobia, and Golden Dawn have actively ramped up rhetoric blaming foreigners for Greece's problems. As Katerina Georgoudaki, a volunteer from SCI Hellas -- organization dedicated to promoting a culture of peace -- explained to euronews: "Racism is becoming very popular in Greece. Many people just see a foreigner and they say we don't want him here. But they don't really know what this person is, where he or she is from, what is his or her life. So for me it is very important to make people aware of it." After arriving in Greece in 2009, and only recently acquiring his legal status, Kusha Bahrami from Iran, also campaigns for change. At the same time, he recognises the new culture of fear: "The situation is a bit scary for foreigners, especially for people with darker skin, black skin. A lot of people say: 'I'm afraid to go out outside'. Even me, I don't try to go outside too late in the center." Zarif Bakhtyari from Afghanistan, went into the centre of Athens two months ago, and after what happened to him, he now lives in constant fear of attack. "I was going around the corner when suddenly I was punched in my nose. I don't know who it was but I got several kicks and punches, I fell down, and they left. I don't know who punched me but it was in the area where the fascists tend to operate, in Agios Panteleimonas." Amnesty International is one of several human rights organisations in Greece calling for a more effective asylum system and a return to traditional Greek values of welcoming the 'other'. The director of Amnesty's Greek section, Elias Anagnostopoulos, is adamant Greece should not be considered a special case, irrespective of the fact that Greek foreign debt has jumped to astronomical levels. "There is no excuse for tramping on human rights, regardless if it is economic situation or any other situation. Greece has been a migrant country itself. Greece has signed international treaties and Greece ought to respect that and protect human rights regardless of the nationality, religion or colour of skin." Whilst many other countries can hide behind the Dublin regulation, which states that asylum seekers should seek protection in the first country they arrive in, with 90 percent of undocumented immigrants entering the EU via Greece, this is not an option for those in Athens. Instead, activists on the ground are looking to their European brothers and sisters for both support and co-ordination. Service Civil International Hellas is the Greek partner in 'Open Doors' - a project funded by the Europe for Citizens programme, a European Commission scheme promoting civic participation in Europe through exchanges and cooperation. which includes representatives from Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Hungary. Together with other European representatives, they are trying to develop a strong, common response to the often dismal, and dangerous, conditions asylum seekers face on a daily basis. As Katerina Georgoudaki notes: "Out of our coordination with Italy and Spain we can gain a lot because more or less we face the same problems. All of us have the economical crisis, all of us have a lot of refugees and asylum seekers. So I think that comparing all this we can have a result in order to understand the situation so that we can do something better." Once considered the cradle of democracy, Greece's reputation for tolerance is taking a hit. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum,[2][3] it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy,[4][5] largely due to the impact of its cultural and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC on the rest of the then known European continent.[6] Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece and it is rated as an Alpha world city.[7] In 2008, Athens was ranked the world's 32nd richest city by purchasing power[8] and the 25th most expensive[9] in a UBS study. The Greek capital has a population of 655,780[10] (796,442 back in 2004)[11] within its administrative limits[12] and a land area of 39 km2 (15 sq mi).[13] The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) extends beyond the administrative municipal city limits, with a population of 3,074,160 (in 2011),[14] over an area of 412 km2 (159 sq mi).[13] According to Eurostat, the Athens Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) is the 7th most populous LUZ in the European Union (the 4th most populous capital city of the EU) with a population of 4,013,368 (in 2004). The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by a number of ancient monuments and works of art, the most famous of all being the Parthenon, widely considered a key landmark of early Western civilization. The city also retains a vast variety of Roman and Byzantine monuments, as well as a smaller number of remaining Ottoman monuments projecting the city's long history across the centuries. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. Landmarks of the modern era, dating back to the establishment of Athens as the capital of the independent Greek state in 1833, include the Hellenic Parliament (19th century) and the Athens Trilogy consisting of the National Library of Greece, the Athens University and the Academy of Athens. Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it welcomed home the 2004 Summer Olympics.[15] Athens is home to the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities, as well as the new Acropolis Museum. The city of Athens contains a variety of different architectural styles, ranging from Greco-Roman, Neo-Classical, to modern. They are often to be found in the same areas, as Athens is not marked by a uniformity of architectural style. Many of the most prominent buildings of the city are either Greco-Roman or neo-classical in styling. Some of the neo-classical structures to be found are public buildings erected during the mid-19th century, under the guidance of Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and Ernst Ziller, and include the Athens Academy, Athens City Hall, Greek Parliament, Old Parliament (1875--1932) (Now the National Historical Museum),[50] University of Athens, and Zappeion Hall. Beginning in the 1930s, the International style and other architectural movements such as Bauhaus and Art Deco began to exert an influence on almost all Greek architects, and many buildings both public and private were constructed in accordance with these styles. Localities with a great number of such buildings include Kolonaki, and some areas of the centre of the city; neighbourhoods developed in this period include Kypseli. In the 1950s and 1960s during the vast extension and development of Athens, modern architecture played a very important role. The centre of Athens was largely rebuilt, leading to the demolition of a number of neoclassical buildings. The architects of this era employed materials such as glass, marble and aluminium, while some blended modern and classical elements. After World War II, internationally known architects to have designed and built in the city included Walter Gropius, with his design for the US Embassy, and, amongst others, Eero Saarinen, in his postwar design for the east terminal of the Ellinikon Airport. Notable Greek architects of the 1930s--1960s included Konstantinos Doxiadis, Dimitris Pikionis, Pericles A. Sakellarios, Aris Konstantinidis and others. Photos and video were taken with a Nikon COOLPIX P100, not the newer Nikon COOLPIX P500. But performance and features should be almost identical.

To the Rhythm of Bouzoukis In addition to quite exceptional archaeological wealth, Athens is also a modern city. Proud of their beauty and a lifestyle protected, amongst other factors, by distance, the Greek islands each have their own personality. Glyfada (Greek: Γλυφάδα, pronounced [ɣliˈfaða]) is a suburb of Athens, situated in the southern parts of the Athens Metropolitan Area. The area, which is home to many of Greece's millionaires, ministers and celebrities, stretches from the foot of the Hymettus mountain to the Saronic Gulf. It is the largest of Athens' southern suburbs. This fashion-conscious suburb is known in Greece for its upmarket cafes, well-known restaurants, boutiques and cosmopolitan summer clubs; Glyfada has also been called "Knightsbridge-on-Sea","Hellenic Hamptons", or the "Beverly Hills of Greece". In ancient times, the area was a deme known as Aixone (Αἰξωνή). Today, Glyfada is packed with some of the capital's best-known nightclubs, upscale restaurants and shops. It could be argued to be one of the most "Americanized" of Athenian municipalities, since an American airbase was located nearby until the early 1990s. The base's population contributed in part to Glyfada's character, leading to a unique blend of Greek and American atmosphere and cuisine. Although the base is now gone and the school relocated, Glyfada still retains part of its American flavour while continuing to offer distinctly Greek cuisine, entertainment and nightlife. Glyfada was established as the heart of Athens' southern suburbs, because of its prime waterfront location, rich commercial centre, and modern business district. It has been described as the headpoint of the 'Athens Riviera' and features some of Europe's most opulent seafront residences, gardens and extensive beachfront property, with a modern marina. The town hall is located at the center of the municipality; nearby, Glyfada’s shopping district has one of the most vibrant and diversified commercial centres of Athens' neighbourhoods, with a collection ranging across specialist and designer boutiques. Its proximity to a succession of beaches and a concentrated seaside club scene also greatly increases the number of visitors during the summer months. The area’s shopping district runs across Metaxa Avenue and Grigoriou Labraki Street while both the offices of major businesses and shopping areas also dot the Avenues Voyliagmenis, Goynari and Gennimata. At the beginning of the 20th century the town had already changed its name to "Glyfada", a name given because of the presence of salt-water wells typical of this area.

The European Central Bank raises the emergency loan to the Greeks by another 3 billion euros. That report different news agencies according to insiders. That money is necessary because the Greeks receive massive money from banks. To ensure that there is enough in cash, Greek banks make use of the emergency window of the European Central Bank (ECB). That goes through the so-called Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) of the European Central Bank. It is a facility where European countries can use in case of emergency. In addition to other loans, the Greeks have so far received 85 billion in emergency aid ELA. That amount is going to take up further.

On October 26th, 2010, Michael Shaw of Freedom Advocates and John Bush of Texans for Accountable Government went to Austin City Hall to meet Austin's new Chief Sustainability Officer, Lucia Athens. They asked her about global population reduction as it relates to sustainable development. Shaw: How do you reconcile the idea of unalienable rights with the goals of sustainability including the Global Biodeversity Assessment Report which calls for an 85 percent reduction in the human population? Athens: You know, the population issue I think is one of those really difficult ones to navigate, it's a very difficult topic to navigate in the context of sustainability and issues and programs. Its not an issue that I want to take on. Bush: You don't want to take on population reduction. That's a good thing! Athens: It just doesn't seem like a place that's gonna be a very fruitful place for us to go. I'm much more focused on practical things that we can try to implement in the near term future but also looking at the long term, that's a very divisive topic. Bush: You are aware of the population reduction aspects of the sustainable development push from the international level? Athens: You know its one of many topics. I don't think it's the most important area by any means. Bush: They do at the UN! Athens: I appreciate what you have to say, I think you've got an interesting viewpoint. Visit FreedomAdvocates.org and TAGTexas.org for more information on Agenda 21 and how to defend your liberty!
